Objectives:
- Students will create models for different phases of Mitosis
Materials:
- paper plates
- pipe cleaners cut in 1/3rds or 1/4ths
- hot glue & gun
- markers
- scissors
- Reference material for the phases of Mitosis
- Mitosis Flip Book (pdf)
- Mitosis Notes
- Mitosis Vocabulary – Definitions will pop up when you advance the slides (Google Slides, view only)
- Flashcards – print and cut out (pdf)
- Mitosis Coloring
- Guided Activity – we did this together as a class
- Mitosis Onion Cell – Identification Practice
- Guided activity – Have students color code the phases identifying one phase at a time and count all the cells in that phase
Directions:
- Assign students into groups for each phase.
- Interphase
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase (1 plate cut or use 2 plates overlapping)
- Cytokinesis (2 identical plates)
- Each student will create a version of their assigned phase, for example, Metaphase.
- Students will select 4 different colored chromosomes with copies if needed
- They will set up their cell then once checked, can hot glue pipe cleaners into position.
- Each cell should have the followed as needed: (the ones pictures are an older version)
- nucleus/nuclear membrane
- centrioles
- chromatin or chromosomes/chromatids – 4 different colors
- spindle fibers
- one or two additional organelles
- their phase, name, and class on the back
- When done, have one person from each group meet and make a timeline from Interphase to Cytokinesis.
