Adopt a City Lesson 8 – Weather Station Models
Objectives: students will learn how to create and read weather station models by collecting, analyzing, and visually representing real-time weather data.
- Lesson Materials:
- NOAA – Real time station models – Have students make observations of their geographic location before and after the lesson
- Google Slides to introduce Station Models & Guided Practice (view only, make a copy)
- Handouts of Station Model Symbols
- Google Doc Handout for practicing reading and creating models and long term data collection (view only, make a copy)
- Optional: Older version of practicing WSM (pdf)
- Additional Resources
- Penn State: enter your weather data and it will create a station entry for you
- BBC Bite Size: Synoptic Charts
- Station Models – Advanced
- Lesson Tips:
- I used the Google slides as a teacher lead lesson to practice reading and creating the symbols then had the students work with a parter to create models for recent weather data in our town.
- You can do the data collection for your location together, then have students do data collection for their adopted city as additional practice.
- Moving forward, each time we collected weather data, students placed their Weather Station Model on a large dry-erase world map that I had in my classroom
